From Sea to Shining Sea!

This was such an eventful week! It was Kingdom Academy's Random Acts of Kindness week. We all picked a name of someone else in the school. Then all week we got to give them little gifts, leave little notes, do good deeds, and pray for that person. It was so much to reveal who we had at the end of the week! Besides RAK week, it was also the week of Valentines day, and we started learning about different parts of America.

Monday
We started learning about America with New York, more specifically the Statue of Liberty. When I asked the students how tall they thought the Statue of Liberty was, they decided that it was definitely taller than our classroom! It is actually 150 ft (not including the base). To illustrate this, we measured out the length of the statue in the hallway. It took about the whole hall! Then we made some crafts so we could look like the statue!

Statue of Liberties!

At the end of day, we decided to take advantage of the snow outside and make some snow ice cream! All you need to make it is a bunch of snow, milk, sugar, and vanilla. I wasn't sure how it would turn out, but it was SOOO tasty!

Statue of Ice Cream!!!

Tuesday
We traveled across the country on Tuesday to talk about Alaska! While holding and sucking on some ice cubes, we learned all about glaciers and animals that live in Alaska. We then drew and wrote about some different things you can find in Alaska. The most creative answer: snow monsters!

In math class, we started to learn how to tell time to the half hour. They get so excited about telling time, I love it! We finished off the day by more shoe tying practicing.

Sorry that I don't have any pictures for today. I had a dead camera!

Thursday
Thursday we had a little Valentine's celebration. We enjoyed some Valentine cookies, Valentine books, and made a Valentine craft for parents!

 Our great Valentine books
I sadly forgot pictures of the actual craft (wasn't the best picture week!) but I hope all the parents enjoyed them! They were hand prints with little hearts in them!

At the end of the day the whole school got together to tell who they had for Random Acts of Kindness. It was so exciting to who had you! I know I was surprised!

Loco Week!

Hola! This week was Spanish week! We learned Spanish words, traditions, and of course ended with a FIESTA!!!

Monday
We started off Spanish week learning all about different Spanish words. Of course we had some fun games to teach us the colors and numbers!

A game to teach Spanish numbers
On both Monday and Tuesday we read a story about a missionary family in Spain. The story talked about their rough times, but how God was always their. To remind them of God's promises they would count the stars. When I asked the students how many stars they thought there were, one student answered "100, NO! 105!" But after discussion, they decided it's probably close to a google!

After A LOT of begging for a movie, I gave in! So, we watched A Stranger in the Woods during nap time. It is such a cute movie about winter animals.

All nice and cozy!

We finished our day with more tying shoe practice. I think they're really starting to get it! If you hear your child singing a song while tying shoes, it's probably this song.

(I'm a little tea cup tune)
Bunny Ears, Bunny Ears, playing by a tree
Criss-crossed the tree, trying to catch me
Bunny Ears, Bunny Ears, jumped into the hole
Popped out the other side beautiful and bold!

Tuesday
The news came on Tuesday that at the end of the week, we would have a fiesta! But, I couldn't plan it all myself, they had to help! So, they each made their own pinata for the fiesta. As much as I love a challenge, I decided that paper mache might be too much. Instead we used lunch bags and tissue paper.

Their creativity was so much fun!

At the end of the day we did our little art lesson by working with water colors. We made masking tape trees, and painted over them. When we take the tape off, the trees will stay white!
They were all so proud of their artwork!
I can't wait to take the tape off and see the finished products!

Thursday
FIESTA TIME!!! The snow was making me nervous that we wouldn't get our party, but luckily we stuck with a two hour delay. Before our fiesta, we had to work hard to learn first. The book we read was Skippyjon Jones by Judy Schachner. It's about a cat that thinks he's a chihuahua, and it's filled with fun rhyme patterns and Spanish words! Also before the fiesta, the students had to decorate the room with streamers. I forgot to take a picture, but let's just say it was very colorful, and EVERYWHERE! Finally, at the end of the day we started our fiesta!

First part of the fiesta was of course, the long waited for pinatas! I'm glad to say that there were no injuries!
Who needs bandanas when you have over sized sombreros!
The candy inside was well worth the wait!

Next part for our fiesta was making our own maracas! And using them to dance with the music! We finished off our fiesta with chips and salsa. Delicioso!

A Wave of Fun!

This week's theme was oceans, which is exactly where I dreamed of being at! The cold weather lead to two delays, but it was still a fun week!

Monday
We started the day with some extra sleep because of the two hour day. But, when the student's came to school they were hyped up and ready to learn! We started out ocean themed week learning about the octopus! God made an octopus such and amazing creature! Besides having eight legs, we learned about how they can squish into crevices, ink for defense, and even change colors to their environments! The students then got to make their own octopus with eight fun legs.
Of course they put their octopus on their heads.!Where else would they go?
One thing I learned on Monday, I do NOT know the plural for octopus. Octopi, octpuses? I still don't know!

Sadly, we didn't have time for any extra fun crafts this week with the delay. Hopefully next week will be nice and sunny (wishful thinking?).

Tuesday
Our ocean animal for Tuesday was the whale! It was a HUGE deal (hehehe). I asked the students who wanted to go outside and go swimming right then. Surprisingly I didn't have any takers! Then we talked about how whale have to swim when it's cold, but they have blubber. To explain the concept of blubber, we took a tray of ice and put two ziploc bags in it. One had nothing it (like "skin") and the other was filled with crisco (like blubber). They got to feel the bag and say which one colder. It was a fun visual for them!
Then we practiced some scissor and writing skills by cutting out our own whales, and writing about why we like them.

Thursday
We took a break from our ocean theme on Thursday to talk about Groundhogs Day! A few students had never heard about the day before, and they were amazed at the idea that groundhogs could predict the weather. We decided as a class though that they probably couldn't REALLY predict the weather, but the holiday was just for fun. We learned some about groundhogs with the book Groundhog Gets a Say.
We also made our own little groundhogs that could peek out of their burrows, and we attached a little poem about Groundhogs Day.

Most of us decided that we hoped the groundhog wouldn't see his shadow because we're ready for spring!
